She ran against Phillips, the next day, at one of the big stores where she was shopping. He had obtained a commission early in the war and was now a captain. The thing seemed to have become alive—to be threatening to burst its heart. But the thin, delicate indicator moved on. She laughed. “Yes,” she answered. “It ought to be grey to match your suit.
